Our Language

Language holds the life force of a nation.

Our language is not lost; it is sleeping. It not only represents the way we speak, it represents the way we think. To relearn our language restores our spirit. The sacred nature of our language explains the past reluctance of Native communities to cooperate with linguists and other scholars. Nowadays, cooperation is welcomed as a valuable resource in our quest to reclaim our language.

This section introduces Long Island Algonquian words and phrases. It does not cover advanced subjects such as word patterns, word construction, conjugation and grammar. Our registered student courses cover these topics.

The links at the bottom of this page present practice phrases sorted into categories with accompanying audio for each word or phrase. As you practice reading and saying the words and phrases, you may recognize that common patterns are used at the beginning and ending of many words. These are fully explained in our registered student courses.
